Adventures In Urban Sketching Part 1

Congratulations on joining the Urban Sketch community!

We’re super excited to have you on board, and we can’t wait to see how your skills develop as you work through our courses.

First of all, let me introduce myself; my name is Rebecca. I’m one of the team here at Urban Sketch Course.

It’s my job to plan all of our sketching adventures, organise the content on the website, keep an eye on the community and most importantly, make sure we have a nice spot for lunch during long days of filming!

Although I do try to organise things before we arrive, it doesn’t always go to plan…

One such ‘disaster’ happened when filming the Greatest Hits of London.

Naturally, Ian was keen and excited to show you how to sketch Big Ben. But, when we arrived, the world famous clock tower was completely wrapped up in scaffolding and tarp.

Oops!

Fortunately, we managed to quickly agree on some equally iconic locations that Ian could teach you, including Tower Bridge and Trafalgar Square.

And we think you’ll agree, the final results were pretty spectacular.

Phew!

But, dealing with obstacles like this is all part of the fun and it’s what makes urban sketching so unique and special.

And, as you’ll discover through our courses, there’s no one better than Ian Fennelly at teaching you how to deal with unexpected surprises…

Ian’s had to deal with a sinking boat in Sketch Wales (mid-sketch!), an inconveniently parked truck in the 5 Villages course, continual interruptions from curious passers-by, and many battles with the unpredictable British weather, to name but a few!

And we don’t edit out these challenges either. We believe that you will become a better, more rounded and more prepared urban sketcher, by seeing real-life urban sketching.

And besides, it often leads to some very entertaining viewing!

FUN FACT: The Plasterers sketch sign in the Urban Pub Sketching Tour was changed to blue because Ian got bored of the red colour halfway through painting it!

Whether this is your first time meeting our Urban Sketching legend, Ian Fennelly, or whether you’ve been a fan for many years, you’re in for a treat.

Ian’s engaging teaching style and sense of humour is second to none. We love working with him, and we hope you’ll agree that this enjoyment shines through in all of courses that we create for you.

Look out for tomorrow’s email where we’ll reveal a little insight about what it’s really like being an Urban Sketcher as popular as Ian Fennelly!
