Your Lessons

In this original and highly enjoyable course, Ian breaks down his entire decades-learned process for sketching any inanimate object into simple steps that you can follow to produce 4 magnificent pieces of urban-style art.

#1 Tractor

In this first of 4 engaging workshops, Ian finds a rusty old tractor and makes it his first subject. You can watch and learn as he breaks this image down into lots of simple steps that you can follow along with.

Starting with the pre-step, Ian demonstrates how to sketch it out very quickly and loosely to work out the best composition. Then you’ll begin by drawing the big shapes and then the medium shapes, before applying .

Finally, you will follow-along with Ian as he shows you what he’s noticing while filling in all of finer detail, until you end up with an incredible image, like this, packed with personality.

#2 Loader
In your second online workshop, we find this wonderful rusty red Loader that had been abandoned at the junkyard decades ago. It was just crying out to be drawn! Positioned at a different angle you will learn how Ian uses big shapes to get everything he needs onto the page, which then gives him the framework to start. As well as teaching you to draw it, you will watch Ian get inventive with his colours to produce a very specific red effect. He also dedicates an entire lesson to drawing the lettering and explains why that’s so important.
#3 JCB

For your third online workshop, Ian selects this classic yellow JCB. With all its rust, its broken wheels and the weeds that have made it their home, this character clearly has many amazing stories to tell!

Ian takes you through how to draw this machine step-by-step using his specific layering process. You will start by drawing the big shapes, then the medium shapes, then you will apply the colour, before adding in the detail.

And it’s the detail that Ian really focuses on in this workshop. This JCB is in his final resting place, but together you are going to explore its character and bring it back to life!

#4 Boat

For your fourth and final workshop, Ian has chosen this boat that was hidden away at the back of the junkyard. Through this workshop you will watch, learn and follow along as this surprisingly complicated image unfolds into something special.

While the boat’s interesting shape made it a good subject to draw, you’ll discover why it was important for Ian to get the panels of the boat completely accurate and how he uses his brush pens to give an object like this the bulkiness it needs.

You’ll also see how he ‘draws’ with his paintbrush, how he incorporates surrounding items to add scale and how he tackles various unforeseen challenges that crop up during the drawing process.

The Junkyard Course Difference

Unlike ‘traditional’ urban sketching that typically focuses on buildings or street scenes. This course is different.
  • Exploring the Character

It’s about looking at an object, really noticing it and all its wonderful detail; the dents, the cobwebs, the broken glass, the old hinges, the worn out tyres, the rust and the weeds. Urban Junkyard shows you how to look at still life differently by exploring its character and story and then bring it all to vivid life on your page.

  • Telling their Story

Our junkyard subjects have many incredible stories to tell of their past life; of the years spent working incredibly hard; plowing, tilling, digging and pulling until they ended up here. Abandoned and forgotten. Yet, while slowly rusting away in their final resting place, they seem happy and peaceful here.

  • Adding Personality

Together with Ian’s guidance, you are going break down these complex subjects into a series of shapes, lines and colours and create detailed, in-depth drawings that ooze personality - all while retelling their wonderful stories through your art. Ultimately, through following and practising the teachings in this course, you will develop wall-worthy artwork, proving that even the most obscure subjects have a story to tell and a place for urban sketchers like us!
