Gillian Butcher, a beginner urban sketcher, discovered Urban Sketching after retiring. Without prior formal art training, Gillian had dabbled in arts and crafts over the years but never settled on a specific medium. Retirement presented the perfect opportunity to explore her creative potential, and Ian Fennelly’s Beginners Urban Sketch Course provided the ideal starting point.

Gillian has taken Ian Fennelly’s Beginners Course and Quick Sketch Course, both of which have given her the tools and confidence to embark on her artistic journey.

The desire to explore her creativity after retirement led Gillian to Ian’s courses. She was drawn to the informal and approachable style of teaching, which made Urban Sketching seem accessible and enjoyable. Gillian saw the course as a chance to embrace art seriously for the first time in her life.

"I like Ian's chatty, informal style and the lack of 'must do's and don'ts'. It encourages me to give it a go and, whilst I'm still trying to let go of the tight, small and fussy, I have made several pictures which have pleased me! The relaxed approach suits me and helping to finally push away my school art teacher's voice which said I was too slow to be any good!"
