Asmita’s creative journey didn’t begin with urban sketching.
As a student, she showed real promise in art, but life took her in a different direction. In her twenties, she discovered photography and for nearly thirty years it became her creative outlet. She was especially drawn to long exposure and impressionistic styles, capturing movement, light and atmosphere.
But recently, something shifted.
She felt the pull to create in a more tactile way. To swap the camera for a pen. To slow down. To get her hands messy with watercolour again.
When she came across Ian Fennelly’s work, it sparked something.
“His approach to urban sketching reignited my curiosity and creative appetite.”
Joining the Urban Sketch Course felt like returning to a part of herself that had been quietly waiting.
Embracing Challenges (And Loving It)
One of the things Asmita enjoys most about the course is the sheer variety of subjects.
From detailed architecture to safari animals, every lesson brings something new. But it’s not just the diversity she values, it’s the complexity.
"Tackling intricate forms, perspective and detail has pushed me outside my comfort zone and accelerated my progress. Each subject presents a new challenge, and with that challenge comes growth."

From Student to Commissions
Since joining in June last year, Asmita has immersed herself fully in the workshops. One highlight was attending the in-person workshop in Seville.
Sketching on location alongside other members of the community, learning in real time, soaking up the atmosphere, deepened her understanding far beyond what she expected.
And then something unexpected happened.
People began asking to buy her work.
Then came commissions – sketches of family homes, meaningful places.
That encouragement gave her the confidence to launch Your Home Illustrator on Instagram.
What started as a personal creative challenge quietly evolved into something much bigger.

The Power of Urban Sketch+
"Ian’s teaching is clear, thoughtful and generous. Each session feels purposeful and encouraging, and I always come away seeing a little more clearly."

But just as important is the community.
The Facebook group has become a place of genuine support where progress is celebrated, ideas are shared and everyone roots for each other. For many students, that sense of connection is just as powerful as the lessons themselves.
In less than a year, Asmita has seen clear technical progress. But perhaps more importantly, she’s discovered what she truly enjoys in her own creative process.
She feels more confident making decisions. More willing to experiment. More trusting of her eye.
“After each sketch now, I experience a real sense of achievement. It brings genuine joy.”
And that joy shows in her work.

Asmita’s journey is a reminder that it’s never too late to return to creativity.
You might have sketched years ago.
You might have taken a different path.
You might be wondering if you’ve “still got it.”
The answer is usually yes.
Sometimes it just needs the right spark, the right guidance, and the right community.
And as Asmita’s story shows – you never quite know where that spark might lead.
