Valletta, Malta

Join Ian Fennelly for a Week-Long Urban Sketching Retreat in Valletta, Malta

7th - 13th November 2027

You step out of your hotel into November sunshine.

The street drops downhill toward the harbour – honey-coloured limestone on both sides, Baroque balconies overhead, the Mediterranean at the end of every sightline.

This is Valletta.

A fortified city built by knights on a peninsula smaller than most towns. Every street is a straight line to the sea. Every corner is a sketch waiting to happen.

Five days here. Ian Fennelly teaching at your shoulder. Fifteen people, five locations, and a sketchbook that fills up with work you couldn’t have made anywhere else.

Where You'll Be Sketching

Valletta is Europe’s smallest capital city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The entire city is the subject.

Built on a grid by the Knights of St John in the 1500s, it’s one of the most concentrated collections of Baroque architecture anywhere in the world. Honey-coloured limestone, ornate balconies, churches on every block, and the Grand Harbour wrapping around three sides.

November is the perfect time. The summer crowds are gone. The light is golden and low – the kind of light that makes stonework glow and shadows do interesting things. Warm enough to sketch outdoors all day. Quiet enough to set up anywhere without fighting for space.

These are some of the spots you could be sketching:

  • The Grand Harbour – one of the most dramatic natural harbours in the world. A subject that teaches you to think about scale and simplify a panorama into something that works on a page.
  • St John’s Co-Cathedral – Baroque detail that looks impossible from the outside, until you learn to see it as a handful of shapes.
  • Republic Street – a straight line through the heart of the city. Perfect for perspective, with real life moving through it
  • The narrow side streets – where the morning shadows cut across limestone and do half the composition for you.
  • Upper Barrakka Gardens – the terrace overlooking the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. The view that makes people stop talking.

"The whole team are so professional and attentive ensuring that everyone on our retreat was confident and able to produce amazing work whatever their previous experience.

"Learning the techniques that Ian uses in his sketching of such complex subjects is broken down into logical steps with plenty of demonstration, help and encouragement along the way. By the end of a fun week individual progress is guaranteed!"

Getting around – Once in Valletta, the city is entirely walkable. All of our sketching locations will be within easy walking distance of The Embassy Valletta Hotel. The city is compact and flat, making it ideal for exploring on foot.

I’m a beginner, is this trip for me?

Yes. Ian will assume no prior experience and will take you carefully through each of the steps in his process as he is doing it — from composition to line work, tonal values to adding colour. By the end of the week, even complete beginners will have produced a body of work they are truly proud of.

What should I bring?

You’ll need a sketchbook, pens, and any preferred drawing or painting materials. A full kit list will be provided to all participants upon booking. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as we’ll be exploring the streets of Valletta on foot each day.

What is the weather like in November?

November in Malta is mild and generally pleasant, with average temperatures around 18–22°C. It is one of the most comfortable times of year to visit, with reduced crowds and beautiful warm autumnal light — perfect conditions for outdoor sketching.

"For those of you who see Ian on the screen, you know how good he is. But when you come to a workshop, you see what an amazing teacher he is.

"I worked for 39 years in education and I have to say, this is one of the best teachers I have ever met. For a beginner, I’ve come through the precipice. And I think I can take that step to become an artist."

"So grateful for Ian. And what made the biggest difference was having other sketchers right there beside me. Their presence, encouragement, and the simple comfort of knowing we were all facing the same challenges made the whole process feel lighter and more enjoyable. It truly helps to share the moment with people who understand the wobble and the wonder of drawing outdoors."

"If you have an in-person workshop with Ian and you have some problems, you can say ‘Ian, please help me’ and he comes directly to you and shows you. That’s something you just can’t do on an online workshop - you have to unmute and ask him to come to you with a pencil.

More Questions?

You might be a complete beginner who has never held a fineliner. Great! That’s exactly where most people start with Ian, and it’s a perfect starting point because you’ve got no bad habits to unlearn – and a week of personal guidance ahead of you.

You might be someone who’s taken Ian’s online courses and now wants to step up a level and experience what it’s like to learn directly from him, in person, in a city that practically begs to be drawn.

Or you might be someone who came on a previous retreat and already knows what impact this week has. (Some of our guests are on their fifth!)

What you don’t need to be is “talented.” You don’t need to be experienced. You don’t need to have it all figured out before you arrive.

You just need to want to spend a week doing something entirely for yourself, surrounded by people who understand exactly why that matters.

Every day follows a rhythm that our past retreat guests describe as “intense but never overwhelming.”

After a good breakfast, mornings start with Ian demonstrating at the day’s location – breaking down what looks impossibly complex into the logical steps that have made him one of the most respected urban sketching teachers in the world.

Then you sketch. Ian moves between the group, working with each person individually. This is the part you simply cannot get from a screen. The moment where he stands at your shoulder and says, “See that roofline? Forget the windows. Just catch the angle” – and suddenly something clicks.

Afternoons are typically spent back at the private studio adding later steps, refining your work, and making new breakthroughs.

Throughout the week you’ll be supported by the Urban Sketch team. Rebecca, Kayla, Neil & Annette are there for one reason: to make sure you don’t have to think about anything except your sketching. Logistics, questions, supplies, dinner recommendations – it’s all handled. One past guest described it as being like “travelling with Mum and Dad again, only more fun.”

Valletta is Europe’s smallest capital city – and one of its most visually intense. A fortified peninsula built by the Knights of St John in the 1500s, where every street runs in a straight line to the sea.

It’s a city that was designed to impress, and it still does – Baroque facades, honey-coloured limestone, ornate wooden balconies, and the Mediterranean visible at the end of almost every sightline.

In a single day, you could sketch:

  • The Grand Harbour – one of the most dramatic natural harbours in the world, with the Three Cities rising from the water on the opposite shore.
  • St John’s Co-Cathedral – plain limestone outside, extraordinary Baroque detail inside.
  • Republic Street – the main artery of the city, perfect perspective lines disappearing downhill toward the sea.
  • The narrow side streets – where morning shadows cut hard lines across limestone and the balconies overhead frame the sky
  • Upper Barrakka Gardens – the terrace with the view that makes people stop talking
  • The waterfront at Vittoriosa – fishing boats, fortifications, and a skyline you won’t forget.

Everything is walkable. The entire city is less than a kilometre long. You’re never more than a few minutes from the next sketch.

And in November, you get the best of it – golden light, warm enough to sketch outdoors all day, and none of the summer crowds.

Valletta is the kind of city where the subject finds you. You just have to look up.

No – and that’s deliberate. Part of what makes Ian exceptional is his ability to read the conditions on the day and put the group in the right place at the right time.

If the light is better on the harbour in the morning, that’s where you go. If a street is too crowded to set up, he knows three alternatives within a five-minute walk.

If the weather changes, he adapts – a covered courtyard or the studio instead of an exposed terrace. If the group needs a simpler subject after a tough day, he adjusts.

This isn’t a fixed tour itinerary – it’s a week of teaching by someone who’s sketched in more cities than most people will visit in a lifetime.

What’s guaranteed is that every location will be chosen for a reason, you’ll be challenged, and your skills will be visibly better by Friday than they were on Monday.

If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to contact our support team on [email protected].

A real human will get back to you within 24 hours.

Ian Circle 2 – Urban Sketch Course

About the Instructor

Ian Fennelly is one of the world’s most in-demand urban sketching instructors. His method –
teaching on location, breaking complex scenes into simple shapes, and building sketches in layers –
has helped over 50,000 students across 188 countries discover that they can draw.

He’s the author of three books.
He’s taught workshops from New York to Barcelona, Liverpool to Marrakech, Chester to Sicily.

His philosophy is simple: “There’s no space or time in a photograph.” He teaches in the place itself – sitting beside you, sketching the same scene, showing you what to leave out and where to start. That’s what makes his in-person teaching different from anything you’ll find on a screen.

Students call him “the Bob Ross of urban sketching” for the calm, encouraging way he makes
everything feel achievable. His retreats typically sell out 12 to 18 months in advance.
