Scott Peterson

From first sketches to art shows: how Urban Sketching transformed Scott’s life and purpose
Scott Peterson, an advanced urban sketcher with over three years of experience, embarked on his art journey during the global lockdown in 2020. Although he had prior artistic experience, it was the flexibility of remote work that gave him the time to dive deep into Urban Sketching. Drawn to Ian Fennelly’s unique style, Scott joined his courses to refine his skills and connect with a vibrant artistic community.

Urban Sketch Course Experience

Scott’s inspiration stemmed from a combination of circumstances and admiration. The lockdown allowed him to begin his Urban Sketching journey, and Ian’s work provided the perfect motivation to hone his craft. Reflecting on his growth, Scott fondly recalls how his sketches have transformed from “awful” to what he now considers “passable artistry.”

Scott has participated in numerous courses with Ian Fennelly, each of which has been instrumental in his growth as an artist, offering a structured path to progress from early sketches to creating pieces he’s proud of today.

"When Covid hit the world I was able to work remotely. That gave me time to begin my art and Urban Sketching journey. I had seen Ian's work and really like the style of his sketches. I have really enjoyed growing as an artist from my first awful sketch to becoming kinda/sorta a passable artiste."

Urban Sketch+ Membership

As an Urban Sketch+ member, Scott values the platform’s engaging live events, bonus workshops, and the supportive Facebook group, which have expanded his artistic horizons and deepened his connection to the community.

For Scott, Urban Sketching has become more than a hobby; it’s a source of purpose and fulfillment in his early retirement. The supportive community and comprehensive resources have transformed his approach to art and life.

"I have grown from a person who didn't draw/sketch with any idea of what I was doing to a person who now tries various other art mediums including pastels, colored pencils, graphite, straight watercolor and acrylic painting. I took an early retirement and without the art world and Urban Sketching specifically I don't know what I would be doing. Art and Urban Sketch + gives me a real purpose with a wonderful community of fellow artists."

These sketches showcase Scott’s incredible journey from his first Urban Sketch to more refined pieces that highlight his evolving talent.

"I have loved getting to know and sketch in person with Ian at the three live workshop events I have participated in with him. He is a joy to be around and probably the most positive, encouraging and genuine person I know. Just a super delightful guy and super talented artist."

Scott’s story is a testament to the power of creativity, community, and perseverance in unlocking new possibilities. He hopes his experience inspires others to pick up a pen, sketch their surroundings, and find joy in the artistic process.
