Urban Sketch Course Experience

Joanie was drawn to Ian’s teaching style and the way he breaks down the process into manageable steps. For Joanie, these courses transformed her understanding of sketching, introducing her to vibrant colours and a playful freedom of expression. During the pandemic, Joanie was searching for inspiration to reconnect with watercolor. A recommendation from an artist named Jeff Carter led her to Ian Fennelly’s classes. Ian’s style resonated with her desire to break away from traditional watercolor techniques and embrace a more fun, stress-free approach to art.

"During the pandemic, i was looking for some inspiration to get back into watercolor and came across a guy named Jeff Carter who paints wonky stuff. Through him, somehow, Ian's name came up so it took one of Ian's classes. I was looking to get out of the straight watercolor paintings I'd been taught to do and to free up my style, have fun and not stress over the process. I really like Ian's teaching style and the way he breaks all the steps down. it just makes sense to me. I love the colors and freedom of expression."

"I've achieved quite a few milestones. I'm finding expressing myself a lot easier without constant editing and reworking. I'm confident that my work is actually pretty good. I figure (now) if I like it, then it's good! I've put myself out in the community participating in art fairs and actually have sold a few! My friends ask me to create art pieces for them. really appreciate that + keeps me in the studio particularly when i'm uninspired! t"
